Brazil's window tint law: what Resolution 960/2022 says
A customer comes into the shop wanting dark film on every window, or gets stopped at a checkpoint and finds out the car's tint is illegal. To advise drivers properly and keep customers out of trouble, the shop needs to know the rules. In Brazil, they are set out in Contran (National Traffic Council) Resolution 960/2022, known as the new tint law, which deals mainly with how much light passes through the film, called visible light transmission, and with bubbles. Here is what changed.
What the tint law requires
Under the current rule, visible light transmission cannot be lower than 70% on the windshield and front side windows, regardless of film color. These are the glass areas essential for driving the vehicle.
On the other windows, such as the rear side windows and rear window, the minimum remains 28%. Very dark films, such as G5 tint, whose transmission is far below that limit, are prohibited and subject to penalties.
The resolution also bans mirrored or reflective films, which impair visibility for the people inside the car.
Exceptions
Some situations follow different rules, such as roof glass, armored vehicles, which have their own legislation, agricultural, forestry and road machinery, and vehicles used off public roads.
Bubbles in the film
On the windshield and front side windows, the film cannot have bubbles that impair the driver's visibility. That makes the quality of the installation even more important.
What the fine is for illegal tint
Using film that does not meet the rules is a serious violation, with a fine of R$ 195.23 and five points on the driver's license. The vehicle is held until it is brought into compliance. If the film is not removed on the spot, the car may be towed and is only released after the film is removed and towing and storage fees are paid.
Enforcement is carried out by state traffic departments (Detrans), the Federal Highway Police, DNIT and state highway departments.
What this means for your shop
For shops that install window film, the rule is an opportunity to advise customers and deliver a legal service, with the correct light transmission and a bubble-free installation. For other regulations that affect customer service, also read about service warranties.
