Car clutch: warning signs and how to make it last
The clutch is one of the parts drivers understand least, yet it gives plenty of warning when something is wrong. It is part of the drivetrain and mechanically connects the engine to the transmission through an assembly made up of a release bearing, a disc lined with high-friction material and a pressure plate. Knowing the signs of wear helps the shop advise customers and keep a simple problem from becoming an expensive repair. Here are the most common symptoms and how to extend the life of a car clutch.
Signs the clutch needs attention
Clutch replacement applies to cars with manual and automated manual transmissions. Vehicles with a conventional automatic transmission, which uses a torque converter, do not have this kind of pedal-operated clutch. The main warning signs are:
Grinding when shifting
A harsh noise when engaging a gear, similar to a missed shift, may indicate wear. Before drawing conclusions, make sure the shift is being done correctly.
Hard shifting
Even without noise, if the driver feels the gears are not going in properly, the system needs to be checked.
Very low pedal
When the clutch engages very close to the floor, even without requiring effort, there may be a problem with the assembly.
Unpredictable engagement
There is no clear engagement point, the car shudders or engages abruptly and nearly stalls when pulling away as the pedal is released. These are signs the system needs a check.
Slipping clutch
Engine revs rise, but the car does not gain speed accordingly. This happens when the disc and pressure plate do not fully engage.
How to make the clutch last longer
Clutch life varies a lot depending on use. In cars driven mostly in the city, it usually lasts between 50,000 and 100,000 km. In vehicles used mainly on highways, the original assembly often goes beyond 150,000 km. Some habits shorten clutch life and should be avoided:
- resting a foot on the clutch pedal
- holding the car on hills with the clutch
- using the wrong gear
- harsh downshifts
- aggressive driving
- overloading the vehicle.
